Mexico Montages (2005):

These paintings are montages of the drawings and photos I made in Mexico. I initially tried to make each composition true to a specific location, i.e. by combining only drawings made at a certain location with photos taken from the same place. Some of the drawings that inspired this series are on my sketchbook page which can be seen by clicking here. From a design standpoint, this approach proved too limiting. I felt that I needed to combine the flowing forms, patterns, and colors in a way that would work best formally. Therefore I decided to treat all my Mexico experiences as a single source of montage material. This decision remains more true to the way I have processed this information in my mind. In truth, I cannot remember minute details, such as exactly where I was when I made each sketch, shot each photo, and had each experience. My recollection of my time in Mexico is like a montage: a series of vaguely related impressions, memories, sights, smells, tastes, and sounds.
