Macro Photography (2008):

I have gotten very excited about the potential with my macro lens. I like the idea of getting so close to something that the image becomes completely abstract. I also like getting close to things that I would normally recoil from, such as insects and dying bats. The detail that this lens gets is just amazing.

Grasshoppers in Sanibel, Florida

One of my first successful efforts with the macro lens. It was windy that day - so this was very difficult. The grasshoppers are technically a nuisance, as you can see by the chewed leaves on the plants, but they're beautiful anyway. I didn't really like getting so close to them, but somehow having the camera between them and myself made it easier.

Dying Bat

I found this poor little guy flopping around in my pool one morning. He must have been in there all night. I fished him out and placed him on my porch, where I thought maybe after he rested up, he might be able to return to life as he knew it. That didn't happen. He hung in there for several hours and finally died. I assume he was already sick when he fell in the pool, since bats don't normally go for a swim. I got a lot closer to him through the macro lens than I ever would have otherwise. I found the detail in these images amazing.

Moss

I like the abstract organic qualit of these images. It almost looks microscopic.

Ice

I simply put a glass of water with ice-cubes in it in front of a window. I also experimented with a flashlight as a light source. I love the abstraction and the light in these images.

Abstract Stuff

The colors of these images were greatly exaggerated in Photoshop. I had every intention of using printouts of these as backgrounds for abstract encaustic paintings, but it never happened.
