The Border Wall (2008):

Construction began in July, 2008 on a wall in Texas meant to create a physical barrier between the United States and Mexico. Like most people in South Texas, I had a hard time visualizing what it would look like, much less believing DHS was actually going to go through with it, until I saw it with my own eyes. On July 18, 2008 I visited a levee in Granjeno, Texas which is about 1/2 mile from the Rio Grande River. At the time, there was nothing there but a beautiful view of a sorghum field. By July 30, 2008, there was a stretch of wall along the top of the levee that ran about 2-3 football fields in length. This was the first segment of the wall that I began photographing. Since then I have also documented sites in Donna, Texas and Progreso, Texas. Each site has its own architectural style and imposes itself on the environment in its own unique way. The resulting images have an beauty that is unsettling and ominous. There are more sites along the Mexico border in South Texas that I will continue to document as long as I have access. A sampling of the images is posted here.
